Thailand's economy is driven by consumption and the retail business is the main mechanism which drives the consumption of the country, generating the second highest revenue after the industrial sector and the third highest contribution to employment after the agriculture and service sectors. Previously, the Thai retail sector had been dominated by small, family-run grocers and street vendors. As the demand for products increased, Thai consumers were changing the way they purchase products. Traditional trading at markets and small independent businesses was being replaced by large-scale modern traders which include hypermarkets, supermarkets, and convenience stores to respond to the growing demand from consumers where convenience seems to be the key. Moreover, Thai retail sector also face competition from large online sellers such as Alibaba and JD.com through the use of modern technology and new innovations. Therefore, personnel at all levels in the retail business which include sales clerk, store manager and loss prevention officer must be able to achieve its strategic objectives according to the specified occupational standards to elevate their potential to higher professional levels.
