About Professional Qualification
In order to work effectively and productively, employees not only need to use knowledge, but they also need to utilize expertise and several skills that come from on-the-job learning and practice. Those who have and who do not have education degrees in the field can improve their abilities to complete the tasks. This application of knowledge, skills, and abilities in carrying on occupation is called “competency.” For each sector that consists of many different professions, each job needs to have several competencies to perform effectively. For example, host and guest service profession of lodging and hotel industry is composed of several jobs such as front managers, receptionists, operators, bellboys, and so on. Each job requires different competencies to perform competently.
Therefore, TPQI encourages relevant entrepreneurs and governmental agencies to identify competencies needed for completing the tasks in one’s job. TPQI then compiles the lists of competencies and uses them to determine one’s capacity in applying knowledge, skills, and abilities in carrying on one’s occupation. Such determination of application level of occupational knowledge, skills, and abilities is called “occupational standard.”
Occupational standards developed by TPQI will be very useful in vocational curricula revision and adjustment. In the process of curricula adjustment, occupational standards will be taken into account so that students will be cultivated with necessary occupational skills. In addition, employees can test their competencies at test and certification centers certified by TPQI, and they will receive “professional qualification” certificates that accredit knowledge, skills, and abilities in completing the tasks in accordance with occupational standards. Consequently, they can advance their careers with professional qualification.
There are different levels of professional qualification under the professional qualification framework. A number of basic competencies for a specific occupation make up level 1 of professional qualification, while a number of advanced competencies make up the highest level of professional qualification. Not only does professional qualification help advance career, but it also can be converted to educational qualification.
